Numerical Analysis of Tissue Freezing in Cutaneous Cryosurgery Using Liquid Nitrogen Spray

چکیده
Information on thermal history of skin tissue and iceball formation is critical for successful cutaneous cryosurgery. This paper presents a numerical analysis of tissue freezing during skin cancer treatment with liquid nitrogen (LN2). A simplified mathematical model is constructed by including the bio-physical processes of the freezing tissues and quantifying LN2 spray cooling with a convective heat transfer coefficient. Propagations of iceball fronts as well as lethal temperature isotherms are illustrated and quantitatively examined under various spray cooling conditions. The injury mechanisms of skin cells at different locations are also investigated based on corresponding thermal history and cooling rates during cryosurgery. These quantitative evaluations will be useful for pretreatment planning and optimization of LN2 spray cryosurgical protocols.

Numerical Modeling of the Tissue Freeze-Thaw Cycle during Cutaneous Cryosurgery using Liquid Nitrogen Spray
INTRODUCTION It is common in some cryosurgical procedures to rely on freeze-thaw cycle(s) to destroy undesirable tissues. Most research in cryosurgery focuses on the freezing process and much less attention has been paid to thawing or re-warming. However, as ice melts during thawing, the extracellular solution can become locally hypotonic, driving water into cells, resulting in cell expansion a...

* Corresponding author: [email protected] ABSTRACT Basel cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common human skin malignancy. Its incidence has increased significantly in Australia, Europe and North America over the past decade. A number of modalities are currently used for treatment of BCC, including cryosurgery which offers a potential for high cure rate, low cost, minimal bleeding and good cosmetic...

The simplest method of freezing is topical application on lesions which one wishes to destroy of a cottonwool swab saturated by immersion in liquid nitrogen (LN). This cryogenic agent, having a temperature of -196°C, is very effective in elimination of a large variety of very common benign and premalignant skin lesions (verrucas, molluscum contagiosum, seborrheic and actinic keratoses...). Unfo...

OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the results of the use of curettage followed by liquid nitrogen spray cryosurgery in a number of solid or multicystic ameloblastomas of the jaws and the postoperative complications related to this treatment modality. STUDY DESIGN Thirty-six patients with solid ameloblastoma of the jaws were treated with curettage followed by cryosurgery. The cryotherapy consiste...
متن کاملVariables in Cryosurgery Technique Associated With Clearance of Actinic Keratosis.
BACKGROUND Cryosurgery is the most commonly used method to treat actinic keratosis (AK). Cryosurgical methods are not standardized. OBJECTIVE To examine differences in the spray techniques used for liquid nitrogen cryosurgery when treating AKs of the head, and the effect of these variations in technique on rates of complete clearance of AKs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients were those from th...
